As with people, we seek to help bridge divides between subjects. Throughout history, the linking and reflection upon different disciplines has led to new discoveries or even radical ‘schema changes’ about how we understand the world. In the words of Nobel Prize winning physicist Werner Heisenberg:-

‘It is probably true quite generally that in the history of human thinking the most fruitful developments frequently take place at those points where two different lines of thought meet. These lines may have their roots in quite different parts of human culture, in different times or different cultural environments or different religious traditions: hence if they actually meet, that is, if they are at least so much related to each other that a real interaction can take place, then one may hope that new and interesting developments may follow.

Making connections between formerly unconnected things is one of the foundations of discovery. Despite that, recent research has become ever more specialised, with each field developing sub-niches that only a select few can truly understand. Reductionalism underpins it all, almost as a dogma.

This is why the Arkbound Foundation is particularly interested in supporting work that bridges different subjects in a logical and insightful way, whilst presenting an alternative to strict reductionalism. We want to inspire people to think deeply about the world, providing space for truly revolutionary theories to arise. Likewise, work that helps shift society away from an excessive focus on materialism, acquisition and self-gratification is of particular interest. This could be studies outlining alternative economic models, knowledge on building self-sufficient communities, or accounts that encourage a life-long curiosity and respect for the natural world.
